It’s only a thousand dollars…

“Don’t say anything, and no one will know,” Jenny said. Jenny is the vault teller at our small bank, which means she is the head of all  the tellers. After hundreds of cash transactions with customers, there are times when at the end of the day, her balance is off. If she is under, she fucking looks everywhere to find that money, or we all get in trouble. It is the bank’s money after all. If she is over, though, it isn’t as big of a deal because she has time to find who might have given her extra money. Either way, it is absolutely mandatory to report each time her balance is off, and report it. I recall the VP threatening us in training, “Even if you are under by one cent, and you put that little penny in your cash drawer from your pocket, don’t bother coming back in to work the next day.”

We never report it. “It’s only a dollar,” we’d reason. Then, it’s only $5, $20, $100, and even $200. Jenny signaled for me to come over to her area last month and flashed me the two bills. “No one claimed it. Lunch is on me,” she whispered with excited eyes. I don’t care enough to rat her out, and I’m not dumb enough to get involved. Or I’m just too scared. I start shaking when I steal a paper clip. I mean, what if they see it on camera?

Today though, it was slightly more. $800 more to be exact. I don’t even know how someone gives an extra $1,000 and doesn’t realize it, but I guess it happens. Jenny reviewed all her tickets and transactions and was certain it was this guy who comes in everyday. He owns two stores, and is always in a hurry. She called him and he said his balance was perfect. “I just think of it as a nice tip,” Jenny said.

She’s crazy. She’s crazy! But, I never get any tip. All I get are handshakes. Damn, I hate those handshakes. I go through bottles of Purell. Anyway, she is crazy but I truly hope Jenny never gets fired. This is the only excitement that exists at work.  Now, I’m not so sad about having to work the day after Thanksgiving. If someone comes in screaming about how they gave more than their account shows, we’re all dead.
