Last night, hundreds of girls dressed in their trendiest indie outfits, (and several dedicated boyfriends), gathered at the Greek Theatre to watch Regina Spektor. I was one of those girls. I felt like I was in NY for a night with my boots, scarf, and gloves. It was still freezing, I was starving, and my seat was pretty far from the stage. I began to wonder if all this suffering was worth it. Then Regina walked on stage.
I was absolutely mesmerized. With Snow White’s complexion, Belle’s hair, Jasmine’s eyes, and Ariel’s voice- she really was the modern day princess. Awe and envy swept the crowd as we saw that she was everything we’ve always wanted to be as little girls. Every time we opened our blue lips to sing along, our breaths hung in the air like cotton balls, and the wind just grew more and more wild. The trees surrounding the theater, our hair, and the collected cotton balls hovering above our heads were all dancing and moving to the beat.
Princess Regina, however, was untouched by the weather. She sang, played the piano, and a drum simultaneously as she assured us that good was better than perfect. But I want to be perfect too! I, too, learned instruments as a kid. Oh Regina, if only I was capable of counting in four’s, that just might have been me up there.
